Writing Development

These stages represent a general outline of writing development in children. Stages often overlap and children progress at varying paces. Writing skills development can be enhanced through regular writing practice, whether it consists of scribbling, invented spelling, or conventional spelling.

  1. Scribbles for enjoyment
  2. Scribbles with the intent to convey a message
  3. Uses drawings to convey message or story
  4. Dictates words to be written
  5. Attempts to write letters or sounds
  6. Uses knowledge of letters and/or sounds to create words
  7. Matches sound with letter
  8. Recognizes difference between invented spelling and conventional spelling
  9. Correct directional patterns in written work
  10. Includes spaces between words
  11. Uses a correct pencil grasp
